Merit Badge Work

Rob Morley (rmorley@STATE.MA.US)

In regard to the question circulating about hiking and camping outside of
scouting events, I agree that we are not allowed to add nor delete nor modify
any for the requirements set forth by National.

My troop has create a troop policy where we have assigned leaders that are
authorized to signoff on merit badge work. Parents are not allowed to
signoff on merit badge work, unless the requirement specifies a parental
signature. This policy was put in place because we ran into problems in the
past. Parents would signoff requirements that their son did not do, or show
favoritism towards scouts they liked and vice versa.

In my mind we are not changing the rules, but just trying to make them fair
for ALL the scouts.

To verify that we were not violating any current BSA guidelines, our
Committee chair to the policy and have our council approve the document. Now
we give a copy to each new scout and their parents.
