Announcements and Vacation report

RJ Miller (rjmiller@DSEG.TI.COM)
Fri, 7 Jul 1995 11:09:34 -0500

I only get digest mode, so I am limited to 50 messages per day, so if this
has been reported, forgive me. The announcement song our pack uses, was
imported from Pennsylvania by the current Cubmaster.

Announcements, announcements, announcements. (standing)
When you're up, you're up; (still standing)
and when you're down, you're down; (squat way down)
and when you're only half way up, (squat halfway down)
you're neither up nor down.(stand up, squat down)
Announcements, announcements, announcements. (stand up)

"Why so long to comment on this old subject?" you ask. Well I was on
family vacation for two weeks in Wyoming, then required a whole week to
finish 16 days worth of digests.

Ah, vacation! Destination: camping in Grand Teton National Park and "the
world's first" Yellowstone National Park. True, the nights were a bit cold
(22 degrees is like the dead of winter around these parts) for Texans
leaving behind 90 degree weather, but otherwise was spectacular. We even
saw a wolf (in the distance, through binoculars) and grizzly bears. On day
two, driving to the top of Pike's Peak in Colorado, after having played in
the snow, my seven year old daughter said "This is the best day of my life!"
That sentiment was typical of the entire trip. We rendezvoused with my
brother-in-law and his family from Spokane, Washington. There were five
registered Scouts and Scouters in our group. We saw so much natural beauty
that we almost became de-sensitized to it. (Oh, it's just another elk with
her calf) Anyway, after we split up, my family returned to Texas by way of
Devil's Tower National Monument, Mount Rushmore National Monument, and Wind
Cave National Park.

While in Yellowstone, my three kids earned the Yellowstone Junior Ranger
patch. This is pretty much like a Cub Scout achievement or two. We all had
a good time working on the workbooks. Getting the patches with a little
presentation in front of the people at the visitor's center was special for
the kids. I HIGHLY recommend the Junior Ranger program, where offered.

In as much as Yellowstone and Rushmore are practically icons of The United
States of America, I'll treasure this trip and recommend it to anyone.
