I too would like to encourage compassion and understanding. My fears are
thunderstorms and fires. Bad experiences with both when I was very young. I
am trying VERY hard to keep our kids from being scared. I was sent INTO a
burning structure to save cattle when I was six. We lost four barns to the
fire. Since then I've been "paranoid" about fire extinguishers and smoke
alarms.
I thought I was getting pretty good about storms until our house took a jolt
in 1989. Fortunately the circuit the power burned out was NOT the circuit
our waterbed was on.
Ten days ago our next-door neighbor's house was struck and burned by
lightening. They expect to be able to move back in sometime this summer.
Our house suffered collateral damage from the strike. Yesterday my
workplace was struck and took damage from the lightening. Needless to say
I'm a bundle or nerves these days.
Something that might help the poor young man would be intensive instruction
from a local museum/science center as well as major reading. Personal
instruction from an expert would be best. Try to keep the torture at a
minimum. For some reason my four brothers were not affected by the fire.
Then again they each had a roommate to talk their fears out and I was alone.
Good luck. May ye fare better than I did.
