It's interesting to see ho other units view fees for leaders.
Here's how we do it.
For regular monthly campouts, the boys pay a flat rate of $10. Adults are
paid for by the troop.
For summer camp, the boys pay the full rate, although they have
opportunities to earn money in their boys fund to help pay the way. Adults
asked to go are paid for by the troop. Others who want to sow up for a few
days, pay their own way.
Tolls and parking fees are paid by the troop.
Drivers can be reimbursed for the actual cost of gas used for
transportation, although, in 19 years with the troop, I can't recall anyone
asking.
We try to stress that it's the boys troop and they are responsible for all
the cost and they take care of this through fund raising. If it's not
covered out of pocket, then it's covered throught the troop general fund,
which is earned through fundraising activities. This whole phylosophy
doesn't work if the boys are not made aware of this.
BTW, it works in my favor to take the tax deduction for my gas. Example, I
drove to summer camp last week in my 91 Explorer at about 17mpg. The trip
is 330 miles round trip. The actual cost was about $25. My tax deduction
for Federal is .12/mile or $39.60 and State is the same for a total
deduction of $79.20. I know deductions are not credits, but it feels
better.
