I have to disagree that those who like math should also like science.
That is like saying if you like apples you should like oranges, because
they are both fruit. As a scientist I have seen many matheticians that
don't like science (and dread the required courses for their degree) and
visa a versa. Also just because a I like the field of planetary
chemsitry, don't assume I'd like physics. Which is reallly strange
considering math is what comes easiest to me. I got into planetary
chemsitry through a back door so to speak, and I'm glad I was able to
find this passion so accidently. I started out towards a math degree (hey
you do what comes the easiest right?) and was forced to make some
decisions during my college career that headed me in the direction that
I'm following today. Math was something that came naturally, I could
pull straight A's without cracking a book even in college. But if I had
not been forced to make the decisions about career choices, I'd probably be
either A) working in a career that I'didn't like or B) still wandering around
in life trying to figure out what was wrong with my life.
I have had troubles with my oldest (14) and school in the past, and have
also been loath to take away either 4H or Girl Scouts. Between 4th and
7th grade we searched and searched and searched for an answer to her
intense dislike of school. Finally on entering 8th grade things turned
around. The answer was that she has found her passion. She now has a
goal for the future, and can understand that she needs to do well in
school to get there, whether she likes the subject or not. For the first
time she came home with a B+ average on her final report card. I believe
that everyone has a passion that will drive them on, finding it is the key.
