Peter,
I don't think you are over-reacting, at least not much. The only
thing I might do different would be to cut out tv and video games on
school nights first, then worry about the school- or education-related
stuff later. I would make my son drop scouts only as a last resort.
Nevertheless, schoolwork has to come first. As painful as it would be
to make my son quite scouts, I would do it if it became necessary.
I am taking a group of boy scouts to Lenhok'sin high adventure camp
starting Sunday, and one of the boys who had originally planned to go
called me about a month and a half ago and said he couldn't go because
he had to go to summer school, which conflicted with our week of
backpacking. I completely understand his parents' concern, and don't
blame them at all for making him cancel. I also think the experience
of not being allowed to go backpacking for a week in the woods because
he goofed off during the school year may be a salutory life lesson
about living with the consequences of one's acts.
Anyway, I think your attitude is the correct one.

Pete Farnham
