My troop this past fall had the Scoutmaster and three assistants in the WB
course and an assistant on staff. It did hurt the troop program a bit for
the six weeks during which the three weekends fell. But other people came in
and pick up the slack (like a camping trip) and the benefits have lasted for
more than six months now and will last for the next few years as those WBers
work their tickets and guide the programs as it is supposed to be run.
Ticket items resulted in improved junior leader training, some additional
merit badges that might not have been tried, a rework equipment hut, and the
list goes on and on.
My troop thinks enough of WB that the troop pays the tuition for any active
assistant or SM who wishes to attend. And the troop committee thinks it has
gotten more than its money's worth.
