50 Km Troop Trip

This last weekend we ended our 'regular' scouting year with a 50 km cycling
trip. Three leaders, a member of the Oshawa Cycling Club, and four
intrepid scouts set out on Friday from our meeting hall for the 6 km ride
to our campsite [for those familiar, we camped at Camp Samac].
Of all of the menagerie of cycling gear, the only injury was my own NEW
bike when I realized that the rear wheel had become warped.
Saturday dawned and we hurried into Oshawa (a total of about 3 km) to get
the replacement tire. The store didn't open until 10:00 am and we arrived
at 9:15.
At 10:30 we finally got away from our site and began our 20 km trip to a
local conservation area [on the edge of our district so no need for trip
permits!]
I was impressed to find that our total road time for the morning trip was
just over two hours.
Lunch was hot dogs, and sandwiches then on to a couple of hours of compass
work, orienteering, and trail markings.
At 3:30 pm we prepared for the return trip. These last 20 km only took 45
minutes to travel [a very long downhill].
The Distirct was also holding their Senior Cub Pow-Wow and we were invited
to attend campfire. A resounding success was the timed explosions above
our heads, and the whoosh as the flames came out of nowhere to start the
fire (dramatics and pyrotechnics never hurt).
Around midnight we settled into our sleeping bags, and some of us then
realized just how sore, and slightly sunburned we were.
Sunday we again shared with the Pow-Wow by taking part with them, and two
groups from Toronto in the morning Scouts-Own. One of the Toronto groups
was a Rover Crew of Special Needs members. This group brought the message
to us through pictures, and all were extremely moved at the stories of
compassion, and of the giving of oneself that were shared.
Shortly after Scouts-Own, with imminent rain upon us, we broke camp and
headed home.
Everyone was completly exhausted, but in converstaion with my leaders, they
felt that this was a great way to end our regular program.
We'll have to see how the rest of the summer goes.
YiS,
Ken Weir
