Erik,
The main reason for scouting is stated in the Aims of Scouting: Build
Character; Foster Citizenship; Promote Physical, Moral, & Mental Development.
In scouting, these Aims are achieved by several methods, one of which is camping
Summer camp using the patrol method (another Method) provides an ideal setting
for achieving these Aims. Usually this experience is Fun. Have these boys been
to camp before? Yes, they will have to cook & cleanup but who will do it for
them wherever they go? If they want a resort with room service, that is not
scouting.
What activities do they consider fun? Maybe the PLC should plan their *fun*
week and then compare the plan to what is available at summer camp to determine
what they don't like about summer camp. I would think that their camp program
could include plenty of fun activities. When we have gone to camp, the uniform
of the day was shorts/jeans and a scout or camp T-shirt and the regular uniform
shirt at dinner. The chores were rotated daily among the boys and provided
plenty of advancement opportunities for the younger boys and an opportunity for
the older boys to show off their experience. The key is to get the boys to
participate in the planning so they buy into it and to be sure that it is fun.
