In response to your question, I have had the same response in my own
troop (LDS unit, Troop 24, Pleasant Grove, UT). The boys just wanna
have fun as the song says.
We need to remember the Aims and Methods of Scouting. The campout
is a method, not the end. Our purpose is to build character, and develop
leadership skills. Uniforming is also a method.
I suggest running your boys through Scoutmaster Junior Leader
Training. This will give them a feel for the leadership aspect of scouting
and then teach them that scouting is designed to give them a chance to
use those skills. Then they will begin to realize that the campout is the
method that can be used to develop these skills and it will help them
understand the purpose of their summer camp.
It is easy to entertain on a compout vs using the campout as a method to
develop skills and character.
