About the Boys

What is the main reason for Scouting?
To me it's to have fun while learning about the things that
Scouting is all about like, building character, leadership,
learning how to take care of yourself in the outdoors and service
to others to name a few. The trick is to find a way to make the
learning enjoyable.

Summer camp is an excellent time for learning, advancement and
having fun. My troop is going to a summer camp for the 3rd year in
a row by choice of the Scouts. I can see the enthusiasm starting to wane
in some of the Scouts, so next year we'll go to a different camp. My
experience has been that too much of a good thing can be bad. The
boys need variety or else they lose interest. Find out what would be
interesting and fun from the Scouts themselves and then challenge them
to come up with ways to do it. You'd be surprised by some of the ideas
they come up with. Of course you have to use your best judgment to make
sure that the final solution is appropriate for your situation. If the
Scouts are a
part of the planning chances are they'll enjoy and learn from the results.
