Susan -
We did an obstacle race/marathon event last year for our Bear den
and it was such a success it was repeated at a pack meeting. Besides the
long curved tunnel (the biggest hit), we did the following:
Walk a beam (beam is 2-3 landscape timbers which are only about
4 inches high)
Pick up small brick, run 10 yards, set it down, pick up another
brick carrying it back to starting point (the
bricks were small enough to pick up and carry in
one hand for most boys)
Put on softball glove, toss softball up higher than the clothes-
line (or a branch or a birdhouse), catch it, and
take off glove
Step/run through tires (instead of tires, we pounded in two parallel
rows of stakes (offset), and strung a rope back &
forth across them to make a zig-zag pattern)

(this is the setup of the stakes)
Go down a toddler (Little Tykes) slide, but you must step on every
step climbing up the slide)
Have 2 adults twirl a jumping rope - boys must run through the rope
hopefully without getting hit or tripping
Dip out a cup of water from a bucket - run to flower bed, water
one unwatered flower; repeat 2 times (nice way
to get my flowers watered - I _had_ considered
having them pull out a weed! ;) )
Put on bike safety helmet and pedal Little Tykes garden tractor
a distance, turn around and return to starting
point, remove helmet and set on tractor seat
Hit croquet ball through a series of 3 hoops and back
Completely pound a 10d nail into a block (all nails had been
"started" - partially nailed in to secure them)
There may have been a couple other events. None of it was timed
- we had an adult at the "start" to make sure that the preceding scout
was at least 3 events into the obstacle course before the next one could
begin. They did the course at least 4 times before I could get them on
to our next activity.
Oh yeah - my scouts are mid-western corn and beef fed so all were
quite tall and the slide and tractor were more of a challenge than you
might think. They wanted to skip steps climbing the slide ladder and on
the tractor - talk about bow-legged! They had a blast!
Good luck with your event!
