The book Go for the Eagle is not new. It was first published in 1987, my
copy was the fourth prining in 1992. It is a good book if you use
it for the concepts and planning ideas. But keep in mind that it was
written in 1987 and things have changed since them (unless they have a new
update of the book) it is OUT OF DATE when talking about the requirments.
There is now a specific workbook (#18-927) which MUST be used for the
project (additional write-up is welcome in most areas) and there have been
changes in the required mereit badges (Family Life). Also keep in mind
that Nancy and Dean Hoch appear to be members of the Church of the Latter
Day Saints (LDS). This is obvious in how they describe the scouting program.
Scouts 11-14, Varsity 14-16, Explorer 16-18. This is how the LDS church
uses the scouting program. This does not change much of anything, except
most scouts are not LDS, thus do not all become Varsity or Explorers (but
some do, depending on the programs in their area). So most scouts earn
their Eagle as Scouts, not Varsity or Explorers as is done by most youth in
the LDS program. (I guess what I am trying to say is that some of the
material is irrelevant to many, but not all of us-skip over those parts and
be aware that items like the ages listed for explorers is really how the
LDS church uses the program, not the ages allowed for youth to be in
Exploring by BSA. (Explorers may be 14-20 years old.)
The book can also be ordered direct from the publisher, I paid 8.98 (I
guess that is my $0.02 worth since the mentioned copy is selling for
$9.00) plus shipping. The shipping depends upon the number of copies you
order. I paid $2.85 for five copies in April 93.

When I gave a copy to my brother-in-law who was not able to join scouting
as a youth but was going full speed ahead with his son, he called me to
thank me and called it a real eye opener. Old timers will find the book to
be mostly common sense, but for the greenhorn, it can be very useful.
KEEP IN MIND, THE PROPER WAY TO USE THIS BOOK IS GIVE IT TO THE SCOUT. If
the scout can use this book to help him plan his trail to Eagle, then it is
doing some good. If a parent uses it and plans everything out for johnny,
then you are cheating Johnny.
