I'd like to add a word of support to Gerald and Ted. Smoking kills
people. I know it's hard to quit, because I was a smoker. But when the
first Surgeon General's report came out in the early '60s I threw my
cigarets, my pipes, and my cigars in the trash can.
My father, a Scout Committee Member for years _wasn't_ a smoker, aside from
one shot at corn silk as a boy. But he died of lung cancer 2 years ago.
The doctor couldn't believe he didn't smoke. But he was in the army and
reserves for 30 years--surrounded by smoke. He served as a VA chaplain--
surrounded by smoke. He was active in Kiwanis, Scout committee, senior
citizens center board, and other civic organizations--meetings filled with
smoke. I firmly believe he was killed by the people he worked with and
served, not intentionally, of course.
I don't want a single Scout or Scouter to be encouraged to smoke or to be
afflicted by secondary smoke. The stuff kills, period. Sorry if this
strikes a sore spot, but I wanted to spend more time with my father and
didn't have that chance.
