I thought I would add something to this post. The News and Observer has
something going on with this WWW page that is og interest to anyone who
enjoys hiking.

One of the people they keep bringing up in their descriptions of the events of
the week on the AT is someone who has taken the trail name "Keebler".
Keebler is twelve years old, and is hiking the AT with his mother. They began
in Georgia in March, and are moving faster than the reporters, so they are
trading messages by mailing ahead, with Keebler leaving notes in shelter logs
and under rocks.
Lest you think Keebler is playing hookey, he competed the seventh grade year
before they left home by doing a lot of extra study, including tutors in the
evening. We are talking one very motivated young man who I believe WILL
succeed in making it all the way to Maine by this autumn.
Our Group is following the N&O Team's (and Keeebler's) progress up the AT
week by week. It's something that supports out programme by capturing the
Scouts' imaginations. After all, someone their own age is hiking the entire
Appalachian Trail!
Our older Scouts manage over thirty miles in five days (including 2000+ metres
altitude change on the uphill side (and the same 2000+ downhill), nearly doing
in a few of the Leaders...). They returned on Sunday, with a whole new
perspective on the possibilities.
