Adults Refusing Training

Another issue that we need to address is LIABILITY. If something happens and
you have untrained adults in positions of power, someone out for blood could
sue any person who had knowledge of the person's lack of training. Don't say
it can't happen, it happened to me. Someone was out for blood and I had to
defend myself. I was left out in the cold by everyone and my personal
liability insurance wouldn't cover me either. Now this was in the course of
my work, but it is not inconceivable that an insurer could look at the amount
of time that we put into scouting and remove it from the hobby category. Take
a look at the OJ trial and substitute Scouter for every question asked of the
criminalists and you get a feel for how you could be made to look.
My personal feeling is that no one should be in any position of
responsibility in Scouting without training. And any pck/troop committee
that has an untrained SM is asking for big problems. Yes I feel strongly
about this -- my defense cost me over $ 5000 and it was settled out of court.

I only speak for myself, 'cuz no one will let me speak for them.
