Bill,
I don't know how far you would like to travel or if this is feasible but ...
Maine has a lot to offer.
1) Saco River Canoe Trip - The Saco River from Fryburg to E. Brownfield is a
fantastic trip for kids. The total trip takes two days (you can stretch it
further if you want) to travel 19 miles. The river is dam controlled, offers
miles of sandbar camping along the sides, has rope swings here and there and
provides several lakes and side trip for fishing. For the most part, the
river is about 50 yards across and usually about 3 feet deep (though there
are plenty of places where it drops of for swimming and rope swinging). It
has one spot with a class III rapid which can be easily portaged (I always
take my youth groups through it and have never had a problem). There are
tons of canoe rental places providing equipment and shuttles in Fryburg. ONE
CAUTION: Avoid big weekends like July 4 and Labor Day because there will be
thousands of people on the river! If at all possible, go midweek to have a
nice quiet trip and see lots of wildlife.
2) Acadia National Park - hiking trails, camping, etc. Books up quickly for
the summer.
3) Bike trips and a ton of other options.
Hope this is helpful!
Have a great day!
