District Awards Dinner

Murphy Peter (MurphyP@RND3.INDY.TCE.COM)

If you're not interested in my bragging then skip this post.

Last night was our annual district awards dinner. Crossroads
of America Council awards 20 Silver Beavers a year. With 12
districts (not counting Explorer Districts) you'd expect each
district to average 1 or 2 Silver Beavers. This year, Del-Mi
District has 4 Silver Beavers. It really is an outstanding district.

My wife, Peg, and I are active in both our church's Pack and Troop.
Peg is a new Assistant Scoutmaster in the Troop. Last night we
sat with the other ASM for our Troop (Bob) and his wife. Bob's wife
had to talk him into coming to the dinner instead of going out on
their own to celebrate their 10-year wedding anniversary. So he
knew something was up. When he saw his name in the program
for receiving his Commissioner's Arrowhead (Bob's also our
Troop's Unit Commissioner) he figured that was the surprise. Bob
was totally stunned when his name was called for the District
Award of Merit. The other Award of Merit went to my wife, Peg
Murphy. We decided that if both ASMs of our Troop received the
Award of Merit in the same year then we should expect great
things from this Troop.

Yet our Troop is not a Quality Unit because the Scoutmaster
refuses to go to training. Peg went last month and Bob wants
to go again as a refresher. Even though I'm just a committee
member and have been to Troop Committee Training, I plan to
go with Bob. We decided to corner our SM and "invite" him
to go with us. Maybe we can even convince the CC and another
dad or two to go with us. This might be our best opportunity
to convince the Sm to get trained or to retire.

I'm really proud of my wife. Thanks for putting up with my boasting.
