A helpful hint for small mailboxes! :)

Recently, as the list has grown, and the number of daily postings along
with it, a frequently heard complaint of some subscribers is that the
mailbox is being filled with "junk", and they are in danger of loosing
their e-mail accounts. Then, there is also the recurring complaint from
some who don't want have to wade through a number of (to them) irrelevant
postings, just to get "the good stuff".
With that in mind, I would like to pass on two possible solutions that
I have run across in my net-surfing.
Solution 1:
For those who don't have as limited a mail quota, there is the digest
mode. In digest mode, a subscriber will receive _one_ message each day.
That message will contain most of the previous day's correspondence. This
is the mode that I use.
Downside - In several cases, particularly recently, some messages won't
appear in the digest for 36-48 hours after they were posted.
Solution 2:
For those who (a) have a very limited mail quota; (b) are _very_ concerned
about the amount of mail that _they_ receive (and the provider charges); or
(c) have a _very_ limited area of interest, there is the "index" mode. In
index mode, a subscriber will receive one message per day. That message
will list a "TOC" of the messages that appear in the digest, but each entry
will also have an identifier, and the file size in number of lines. To
retreive wanted messages, follow the instructions at the end of the index.
If multiple files are requested at the same time (in the same message), they
will be sent in the same message.
I tried the index method yesterday and today, and it works exactly as
advertised. The only problem is that the subject of the message does not
necessarily reflect it's _true_ content. (But we've _always_ had that
problem, havn't we? ;) )
