Re: The Ideal Patrol (what works for you)

We have 3 gold patrols that are permanent. The assignments to the patrols
are for non staff (Junior Leaders (except PL and APL and VC Chief) are
their own patrol) and for boys under 14 (boys over 14 are in the Venture
Crew (if not on staff) which acts as it's own patrol). The boys are a mix
of age. New members are assigned to a patrol at the "Green Scout"
graduation. (Each March)

The names of the "Green Scouts" (3 patrols worth--Well really 2 (16 boys)
in this year's graduating "Greenies") were put in a hat. The hat was shaken
and each patrol leader of a "Gold Patrol" picked a name in sequence till the
patrols were filled.

Overall then we have 3 "Gold Patrols" 3 "Green Patrols" the "Staff Patrol"
and the "Venture Crew" (Not to mention the "Old Foggies" Patrol :-) )

We tried in the first year of the "First Class in First Year" emphasis to
graduate boys from the "Green Patrols" to the "Gold Patrols" as they made
first class. This didn't work very well for us. The Green Patrols never
really had a patrol identity when the membership changed so often. The Gold
Patrols had problems maintaining teamwork when they were taking in new
members at random times during the year.

I'm not sure exactly what the PLC would do if the total number of "Gold
Patrol" members was to grow much above 30. (Maybe we'll get the opportunity
to see next year :-) ) We've taken in 30 boys since January.

(This is based on the recollections of other ASM's and the SM since this is
my first year with the troop)
