Lew,
I thought my troop was the last one to use leggings! When I was a Boy Scout
('70-'76), my troop (at least for the first four of those years) required
the Scouts to wear leggings. I do not remember any other troop at that time
wearing leggings. The great thing about leggings is you didn't have to hem
your pants. The pants hem didn't need to be let down as you grew up because
they were never hemmed up to begin with. You just took the extra length and
hid it in your leggings. The bad part about leggings was the ridicule we
suffered from others, both non-Scout and Scout.
It was an inside joke within the troop never to tell tenderfoots how to put
on their leggings. They would invariably put them on with the clips facing
in instead of out. As soon as they started walking, the clips would catch
upon each other and send the young Scout sprawling. Some how that seemed a
lot funnier to me back then then it does now.
Well, thank G-d that leggings have gone away. I liked them when I was
camping, but a good pair of gators accomplish the same effect. The rest of
the time, most of us just found them to be a nuisance.
