You have it!, sorry to say. They are suppose to be revamping the program, but
who knows when we will have something. Basically your left with just running
them through the motions and then let them forget it!
I work with a special needs scout troop and we try to run our program as much
like any other unit. Some times it seams like we are just going through the
motions, but then just when you think "what's the use" one of the boy's
supprises us by showing us that he understood something that nobody could have
possable understood.
There has been some discussion, but It would be good to see some more. I know I
am always looking for new Ideas!!
Some things that have worked well in my troop:
Guests:
They like to see new things, If you can have someone come in and show
them something. (Hand's ON is the key!!)
Videos:
If I can find a video that discusses the subject we are working on they
just love to watch it (even some that I think are borring). I even have a scout
with visual imparment (blind) who loves to watch videos.
Other:
Beachball baseball: get a beachball and a big plastic bat.
Rope toss: (emergency prep. requirement) I have one scout who just
comes and sits, but even he got up and did this one!
Nature walks, Car Wash, and They also love to get outdoors !
Also check with council, and see who else is out there.
We have 1 other troop in our council, and there are several in the
neighboring council. We plan some activities with the other troop, and we go to
a special needs jamborette in the other council every year.
