I have had the pleasure of working with a fellow
who worked at Philmont for several years and his comment
was that it is clearly a maturity issue.
10 days on the trail is a long time and over the years,
they have found that 12 year olds are not mature enough
in general, to handle the trip.
We all know 16 years olds that are immature and 10 year
olds that are going onto 27 in the maturity catagory.
After talking with this fellow and many of the scouts
that have been to Philmont, I have been told that
they have a much better time when they are 15-16 than
when they were 13-14.
The goal of Philmont is to have a GREAT TIME, not to just
go there. In that light, I would recommend waiting to 15
before going.
I support their age requirements. No matter what date is
the cutoff, there will alwas be 3% of the boys which
miss the cutoff by one day.
Everyone would like to see a better registration system.
It bothers me when I hear of some troops that go with multiple
crews every year while other troops continually are blocked from going.
Theres got to be a better way...
