Dear Nancy,
In addition to Fast Start for Troop Leaders, Scoutmastership
Fundamentals, The Boy Scout Handbook, and the Scoutmaster's Handbook, I
would recommend Woods Wisdom, which is a useful collection of program ideas
I have found invaluable for Troop meetings and activities.
After 2 years as Troop Scoutmaster, I would highly recommend the Boy
Scout Wood Badge Course, an advanced course for adult Scouters. If he can
survive all that and keep his boys busy, he will be well on his way to a
successful career as a Scoutmaster. Also don't forget to encourage him to
utilize the other resources available to him such as this list, roundtables
in his district, and the professional staff of his local district and
council.
