Philmont - Age Limit

Rick Gill (rgill@PRIMENET.COM)
Sat, 8 Apr 1995 17:32:07 -0700

I have been on this soapbox before but since traffic
has resumed with the latest Philmont Phone Overload.
What would happen if the REQUIREMENT of Age
was left to the people who were responsible for the
boys, the adults who have hiked/camped and been
with these boys (in our Troop 100+ days last year).
a lot. Describe the conditions, the maturity level,
physical conditioning required, and let the adults
make the decision. Now here is the kicker - If in
the opinion of the ranger on the first couple of days
this Troop will not make it - then the CREW goes
home. PERIOD NO QUESTION NO APPEAL.
I as an adult would not put an entire crew at risk
over a marginal boy - especially if I traversed the
country to get there. We hear about individual
responsibility, lets put the responsibility where
it belongs. Get in shape, do the prep hikes, check
the gear, make sure that the crews can work together
BEFORE you go. Do not penalize our mature 13,14
year olds - who hike the mountains year round
because you want an arbitrary age limit to use when
you have to make a decision on who does or doesn't
go. Of course this will never happen -
My .01 (Only been to Philmont once or it would have
been .02) YiS
