We have three camps locally. They all fill a need.
Camp 1. It is next to railroad tracks. Depending on where you camp, when
the train comes through it sounds as though it's headed right for your tent.
Also busy highways and
encroaching civilization detract from the great outdoors aspect.
Camp 2. We've sold the woodland to the forest preserve district. We
retained the
main lodge building and parking lot for several years, but that is also
now on the selling block. At an OA Fellowship several years ago, an
indian solemnly shot an arrow into the woods during a ceremony. Soon a
very unhappy homeowner who lives adjacent to the camp appeared at the
lodge with the aforementioned arrow. He had removed it from his newly
installed aluminum siding. That was the last Fellowship we held at that
camp. We moved them to one of the other camps.
Camp 3. We have a beautiful 500 acre ranch with woodland and prairie.
One one campout the boys were admiring what they thought was the northern
lights, aurora borealis. I was sorry to tell them no, that is the light
and vapor cloud from the Byron Nuclear Power Plant just beyond the horizon.
That camp also has a main line of the Burlington Northern railroad on its
northern boundary.
No camps are perfect. With all their imperfections, the boys have a
great time at them and I don't want them sold.
BTW. I'll be on staff at a SMF course on Saturday. It is being held at
a county forest preserve that was formerly still another BSA camp. I
attended summer camp there when I was ages 11 and 12. It was sold 17 years ago.
We still have access to the property and make use of it now and then. Of
course it's public now, and just not the same.
