Uniforming

Just one more thought on uniforming.
In an urban area where a boy has a number of troops to choose from, those
troops that require full uniforming are usually up front about this and it
can be considered before the decision to join. If it is a REAL stumbling
block, and the troop has no provision (uniform exchange, chances for the boy
to earn the money himself, etc.) then there usually are other GOOD troops
that do not require the full uniform. It doesn't mean that the boy has no
place to participate in the program.
In a rural area where there is only one troop available in the town, (I have
done most of my Scouting in Nebraska and eastern Colorado) then I can
understand a reluctance to make such a requirement.
But if a troop is willing to help every boy get uniform pants, etc., by
maintaining a uniform exchange for outgrown items, or by providing
opportunities for earning money to buy uniform items, there are a lot of
benefits in it. The idea is not to keep boys from being in the program, but
to help them get the most out of the program.
