Re: Cut Cost of Uniforms

My son and myself both have complete Scout Uniforms, and so do most of our
Den, we really encourage the kids to look good in their uniforms. But I do
want to say that the cost is prohibitive - not just because people can't
afford it - many can!! However, we all go to the Scout Shop and see the way
out of line price and quite rightfully start wondering why one uniform should
cost so much!! I just bought my son a new uniform, and a pair of shorts and
it cost over $100. That didn't even include all of the parts - as we already
had the hat, scarf, belt, etc. Ridiculous!! I don't even pay half that much
for good church clothes!! If I can find similar clothes for much, much less
in retail stores (all of which have certainly tacked on their own large
profit margins!). How come BSA, with the huge bulk that they order their
uniforms, not manage to provide a good sturdy uniform at a good price, and
still make a nice profit out of the deal. When my son was a Tiger, our
Tiger's wore the blue shirt, but were not required to complete the uniform
until after graduation, I bought my son a couple of pair of nice twill blue
pants with pockets all over them from Target for about $11 a pair. They were
great!! If BSA could manage competitive prices, I and I'm sure many others
would buy many more optional uniform parts, such as more shorts, T-shirts,
short and long sleeve uniform shirts, instead of making our son's either
roast in long sleeves during the warmer month's or freeze in short sleeves in
the colder month's, to avoid the outrageous cost of another simple blue
shirt!!
