At various times, the troop I'm in has done buddy cooking, troop cooking,
patrol cooking with adults separate, and patrol cooking with adults
included.
Each of those has worked well in some circumstances, but disasterously in
different circumstances. So I would say the most important thing is to
consider the situation. For new scouts (or even older ones if they're
trying something different) it is usually good to have someone around who
knows the basics of cooking (can tell when the chicken is done, or when the
cake is cooked), not to do the cooking put to provide the occasional advice
to the boys so that things aren't a disaster. The hard part is to get this
person to allow the boys to do the things and learn (sometimes that's
easier if they're eating with a different group than they're advising).
I think it's good to have the adults cook seperately most of the time
because it keeps them out of the boys' hair, allows them to show the boys
what kinds of things can be done, and provides a bit of a "safety net" if
there's a disaster with one group (ie the bread for the French toast wa
left in the cooler and got soggy because the ice melted). So all things
being equal, this is the arrangement I'd use.
