Webelos Woods Demos

Just returned from a very successful Webelos Woods despite the
rain, hail, high winds and tornado watches. The weather forced
changes in a few activities but overall was a fun weekend for the
boys.

The morning consisted of thirty minute sessions on fire building,
pioneering, orienteering and first aid. Just long enough to impart
some information and short enough to maintain attention. The
afternoon sessions were competitions based on the skills learned in
the morning. The weather did force some modifications here. Thank
goodness for pavilions! All sessions were conducted by boy scout
troops or explorer posts with the adults providing assistance.

The fire building/cooking competition was the one my webelos really
enjoyed. As a team they had to gather wood, build a small hot
cooking fire and then cook a pancake. They were timed from start
to finish. The griddle and batter were prepared by the scouts
supervising the competition. The rain made the task even more
challenging. While awaiting their turn in the team competition
they made fire starters with instruction and supervision provided
by the scouts. (They even learned how to smother a fire when a can
of paraffin left unattended burst into flames)

I apologize if this approach is old news. I'm new to the game so
it looked good to me.
