I'll add a few comments about 4H to what Lynn posted. Our two
older children participated in the county program before they
got too involved in scouting (oil painting and woodworking). Last
Aug, I was resp. for testing the urine of show animals for illegal
drugs at the Indiana State Fair- and had a chance to view the exhibits
from around the state (mostly the 92 county fair winners) during my
free time. I was impressed! There were exhibits from all ages.
I saw a secretary and a rocking chair that were just beautiful in
the woodworking division. Very ingenious lamps in the electricity div,
clothing and needlework that would amaze you. Food you ask? You name
it- decorated cakes, pies, breads, cookies, etc, vegetables from
gardens- perfectly shaped and loads of each kind of veg. you could name-
insects on pins displays, wood and leaf collections, I could go on.
Any one of these I'm sure would have qualified for the appropriate
merit badge. The 4H-er just keeps working in the same area and
ahas to meet higher stds each year to get a blue ribbon- they
explore the area in depth.
With regard to the live animal judging- it is not uncommon for
the owner of the winning steer to get $35,000 (not bad college
money)
Visit your local 4H fair or your state fair if you can- you'll be
amazed. (I had some GREAT barbequed sweet corn and lamb kabobs)
(Do they still make smothered hamburgers? cook the hamburgers
in the frying pan- then dump an undiluted can of Campbells'
veg. soup over them)
All this talk of cooking is making me hungry.
