I did a snipe hunt myself back in the mid '50's and was no worse for the
wear, but then I had already seen it on Spin and Marty. I understand
why it cannot be used today.

The initiation requirements for Boy Scouts are quite clear. They are in
the Boy Scout Handbook under "Joining Requirements" (page 4 in my copy).

It can be difficult to convince your boys that something that they went
through when they joined cannot be done anymore, but they must realize
that times have changed and the rules have changed. I had to convince
my Scouts that the troop would be thrown out of camp if they did not give
up their "initiation" (and it would have). As an adult leader, you are
charged with making sure that the rules are followed or you may be
personally liable.
