elections

In response to the request regarding elections.

In the troop to which my boys belong, the SPL is elected at large by
the troop, serves for approx. 6 months, cannot succeed himself in
office, and must be first class or higher. All boys present at that
troop meeting who are registered may vote. PLs are then elected by
their patrols. All other troop offices are selected by the new SPL
with the agreement of the SM and are appointed. PL appoints his own
APL.

In a previous troop where I was SM, we followed the above rules BUT
for some time elected the officers fro a 12 month term and did allow
the SPL to succeed himself. One one occassion the same boy was
elected to two consecutive terms and did a poor job. The TLC (PLC,
Green Bar or whatever of the time) then VOTED to make the terms six
months and no succession, and the troop followed those rules until I
left. The boys DO learn from their own mistakes!!

I am aware of one troop in my District in which EVERY officer is
elected by the troop at large. New boys in the Troop are excluded
from voting - I don't know the time limit to become a 'voter'. For
each office, there are individual eligiblity requirements for having
served in other offices previously.

Hope this helps
