Bicycle Safety

Re: Bicycle safety-- I don't know if this has been discussed in the
past- but I don't think it hurts to pass along a fresh anecdote
to convince those scouts who would say- Naw, It won't happen to me.

About a month ago- our computer manager (mid 30's father of 4 little girls)
was riding his bike to work on a dark cold morning- as he has done
for the past 5 years or so. Coming down a not so steep grade- he
hit a chuckhole-- his bike stopped- the front fork bent- he, though,
didn't stop moving. He went over the handle bars- and hit his helmet on
the pavement- cracking the helmet. His bottom teeth went up thru
his upper lip. His front upper teeth were lossened. He suffered
bruises on his face resulting in much swelling. A city bus with a
phone was right behind him to call for help. It happened not too
far away from a hospital.

He is none the worse for wear- back at work now about 2 wks or so.
I don't know the outcome of his upperteeth (no pun intended).

Lesson- buy a GOOD helmet and wear it.

I forward this story as scouts prob now are getting their bikes out
and may need a refresher on bike safety. (Some police depts run
a bike safety course)

Enjoying warm Spring weather here in W.Lafayette (lower 70's)
