Rick, I think you might find some things in the Field Book, also in pioneering
merit badge pamphlet. As a scout, we made a lot of rope out of binders twine.
In our unit, all ropes were made with one green strand. We dyed one bale of
twine. That way, you could always identify a rope from troop 4. At one point
we used a combination of two green strands and one of another color which
identified the patrol. That didn't last long because patrols changed and
wanted their own colors!!
Tent ropes were color coded by tent type by dipping the ends in paint!
Rope making is a wonderful activity that visitors can participate in. At one
show we allowed people to turn the crank for us. Anyone who did got a small
piece of rope with a troop 4 tag on it. We wanted to give out longer (6 foot)
ropes but we anticipated their use as whips and decided against it.
We also made red, white and blue ropes for the camp flag pole!
