Big Troops

I read about these so called big troops of 40 and 50 scouts and become
amused. We just rechartered 135 scouts and 45 adults. We have more
adults than most troops have scouts. The troop across the interstate
from us has about 100 scouts and 35 adults. Last summer, we hiked
across the continental divide with 60 scouts and 30 adults. Our troop
is not affiliated with a church, school, or civic group, but is
sponsored by a non-profit Inc. of x-scouters and leaders. We also
have a Cub pack of 50 and a Girl scout troop of 60. The Post we
sponsor is a nationally known Indian dance group called the
"Kwahadi's" and they have about 40 Explorers and 40 adults. When you
add up the numbers, well I think they speak for themselves.
I don't quote the above numbers to gloat. On the contrary,
Enjoy the size you are. It is a logistical nightmare each month when
we go camping (we go every month and 2 summer camps). Our February
snow camp (300 miles away in the mountains of New Mexico) where 105
total went cost over $800 in food alone. Add in the fuel cost on 2
busses, our big truck, and 12 suburbans and we still kept the cost to
$15 per person. 45 tents and 20 tarps and all the cook gear, plus the
personal gear, and on and on.........
Some troops are small, some medium, large, and then there are
troops 80 and 86 of Amarillo, Texas. I guess the old phrase is
correct. "EVERYTHING IS BIG IN TEXAS". Still I dream of the small
troop of 15 scouts and 4 leaders and the one-on-one training that can
go on with the scouts.
I guess that my .02 cents are up, so I'll throw in a buck.
