The lowest level treks run about 50 miles. The one I was on reached a top
elevation of about 12,000 feet on Mt. Phillips. The daily hike ranged from
5 to 10 miles, with one "rest" day near the middle. These are the
"Typical" treks.
The "Rugged" treks are, I believe, around 60-70 miles total. A bit more
hiking each day, and maybe some higher elevations. "Strenuous" treks come
in at closer to 90 miles, I think, while "Super Strenuous" can go up to
120 miles in the same 10 days. Treks which include Mt. Baldy get up to
14,000 feet elevation. Note that Base camp is around 7,000 feet.
My Personal choice would be for the "Typical" trek. You get a good dose of
the hiking, yet don't spend all day on the trail. Particularly for a first
trip, there is much to see and do at the staffed camps. (Gold Mines,
Blacksmithing, shooting sports, rock climbing, horseback riding, logging,
branding, homesteading, etc.) IMHO, these experiences are a major part of
the Philmont experience. You still get the Philmont feel on a 50 mile hike.
Spending 12 hours a day on the trail is not my idea of fun.
