A Beautiful Act Of Kindness

Michael Smith (msmith@EMST-DC.PLANSYS.COM)
Mon, 27 Feb 1995 15:19:26 EST

Hi everyone in SCOUTS-Land. An absolutely beautiful expression of caring for
fellow scouts just entered my hands. This letter appeared anonymously and
the person wants no recognition. That is what I find so beautiful. I am
copying the letter here exactly as it was received, not to recognize the
person, but to recognize the ACT. We see and read so much garbage about the
world every day, its really nice, on occasion, to report something that shows
that the world isn't so bad after all. The letter read as follows:

"Mr Smith

I was monitoring the E-Mail for a collegue while he was on vacation. I
happened across your letter concerning the Hungarian Scouts. I "fingered"
your E-Mail address to get your company's address. I was a scout in Romania
at the time the Communists took over. Like your Hungarian leader, we were
also forced to terminate our scout organization.

I think it is great what you and your pack are doing. I know you did not ask
for money to help this cause, but I really don't have anything else to offer.
Please accept this humble donation and use it to purchase anything that the
Hungarian scouts need.

My religious beliefs direct me to help other people in a way that prevents
self gain, including recognition. That is why I am being so very careful to
ensure anonymity. Please accept this donation and use it as you see most
beneficial to the boys. My reward is in my good feelings for being aboe to
help in some small way.

May God bless you and your pack for your kindness"

Attached to this letter was a $100 bill.

So often we help or contribute knowing that we will be "listed in the
program", or will get a bumper sticker, or a big bird tote bag, or some other
form of recognition (I'm as guilty of this as anyone). But this person took
caring to another level. Helping because help was needed, with no possible
way to reap any personal benefit whatsoever.

This kindness brought a smile to my face, as I hope it will do for you too.

YiS,
Michael Smith
