In our council, a 'certified troop camper' has taken Basic Leader Training
level III and IV. Level III, involves planning for an event (a trip, or
camp out) with the troop. It covers all the basics such as forms that need
to be filled out, training requirements, travel arrangements, etc... At
our level III training the group actually plans for a camp out (their level IV
training). The training session for Level III is a full day. Level IV
Training is an actual weekend camp out. To take a troop ANYWHERE other than
the meting place, someone in the troop must be level III certified. To
take a troop camping other than in a lodge, someone in the troop must be
level IV certified. Level III is a prerequisite for Level IV training,
but Level I and II are not prerequisites for level III and IV training.
Level I is Basic Leader Training, Level II is program age training (specific
training for the age level the leader is working with). Basic I & II are
required for ALL leaders.
A Level 2 First Aider is someone who has had at the minimum the Red Cross
Responding To Emergencies course. A First Aider is required to do anything
outside the troop meeting place. Troop camping can also be done with only
Standard First Aid & CPR, provided the troop is not more than a 1/2 hour
(I think, don't have my book handy) from medical help, and they are not
doing something that increases the risk of injury (ie, rock climbing, white
water canoeing, etc.). If they are, then a Level 2 first Aider is required.
A level 2 First Aider is required to go to an Amusement Park, however most
Amusement Parks have a First Aid Station which qualifies for the Level 2
First Aider. The First Aider and The Troop Camper do not have to be the leader.
I'd also like to comment on the BSA training, that someone said was
available to the Girl Scout Leaders. I would just like to mention to the
GSUSA Leaders...Check with your council first if you plan on trying to
substitute the training. Our council will not accept any other training than
their own courses. There reasoning is that, they run the training courses,
so they know what training covered and what knowledge the leaders
should have. I grew up in this council, all my camping training came from
this council as a girl. But I still had to take their training for Adults.
They are now allowing Seniors to take any of the adult training courses
as well. And Seniors can act as the troop camper or First Aider (if
certified) for younger troops. This has helped several troops that have
girls that have siblings that are Seniors.
