My two cents:

Scouting is not required in the U.S. Kids join because they want to be part of
a "Peer" group. Boys at the Middle School age tend to "gang" together.
Scouting simply offers them an opportunity for a more controlled environment
with adult supervision and support. The boys run the club. I have been told,
that even in countries where scouting is all co-ed, Boys, and even girls in
this age group, tend to group by gender when left alone.

Have you read any studies on the subject of single gender development in youth?

I fear we spend too much time altering mother nature to meet idealistic themes,
but do not fully understand the long term impact on human development.
