I'm only surmising, but I think the flag is painted on the fuselage as if it wer
e
flying in a "500" mile per hour breeze.
On the Starboard side (aircraft nose facing right), the flag would appear to
unfurl toward the back of the plane, and thus the blue field would appear in the
upper right corner.
On the Port side of the aircraft (nose facing left), unfurling toward the rear o
f
the aircraft would cause the field of blue to be in the upper left as we would
expect it to be if mounted on a stationary wall.
