To Tom Foss regarding Blue and Gold ideas
Some years ago I was a cubmaster faced with your exact dilemma. Based on
an idea from a roundtable this was what I did ... it was a BIG hit with
the boys.
First, speaking, you explain that you will not say what is going on ...
everyone has to guess. Then you do not say another word until the
pantomime is finished, you may then ask how may people "got it"?
Then one by one you draw boys and parents into the pantomime. (Don't ask
for volunteers (don't talk at all!) ... just pick liberally from the room).
First, get about 5 boys and parents line them up at arms length from each
other and have them hold hands. (One side of the runway)
Second get about 5 more boys and parents and have them line up facing the
other group and have them hold hands too. (The other side of the runway)
Now we have two lines (10 people or so) holding hands facing each other.
The rows should be just more than two arm lengths apart.
Next get two boys (adults don't do well at this) and place them just
outside the facing lines. Have them hold their hands at full length
in front of them. Then have them turn around continuously. (The airport
beacons)
Finally, get three or 4 boys and have them spread their arms into wings and
come in for a landing on the runway.
During all this, you (as leader) DO NOT SAY A WORD!!!!!! Everything you
do, you communicate by acting out yourself or by placing people into
position. That is, you can take one persons hand and place his hands
into another's but you can't tell them to hold hands. You have to
communciate that two lines need to form and hold hands wordlessly.
You may want to demonstrate the plane landing yourself, or you may want
to walk a boy through it. Its up to you. Shake your head, nod your
head, point, whatever .. just remember ... no talking.
It's a great lesson in following directions, non-verbal communication,
reasoning and just plane (excuse the pun) fun too. Let me know how it
turns out.
