The 10th point of the Scount Law: A Scout is Brave
On December 21, 1994 Grant R. Milner died as a result of injuries
sustained in an airplane crash. Grant was an Assistant Scoutmaster
of Troop 890 Dallas Texas, chartered by the Lake Highlands United
Methodist Church. He was 25 when he died.
He joined Troop 890 as a boy in 1980. He received Oak Leaf Training,
Golden Acorn Training, was twice Senior Patrol Leader, earned his
Eagle, and became an adult leader when he turned 18. He received his
Wood Badge beads in 1990. Over 70 scouts and scouters attended his
funeral in uniform. Many others attended, but were not in uniform.
Grant was co-pilot of a small plane that developed engine trouble as
it made its approach to landing. For some reason, the pilot was
unable to attempt the landing and Grant took control of the plane. In
avoiding a residential area, a power line was clipped and yet still,
he managed to belly land in a small field. The other two passengers
walked away. Grant sustained mortal head injuries. After 4 days on
life support, he was allowed to pass on and his organs donated to
help others.
My son cried and cried when he found out. I cited the 10th point and
reminded him that if Grant had not have been brave in bringing that
plane down, then others in the plane or on the ground would have been
killed. Now it was our turn to be brave. The next day he said it
helped.
I thought a lot of Grant Milner. He was a committed scouter who set
examples even in death. I'm glad that 15 years of 890 kids can take
a lifetime of happy memories of him with them.
You won't read about this in the paper, there's not enough room for
such stories. But be reminded that you touch many people's lives for
the better in Scouting.
