As to the term "co-ed." It does have two meanings. The proper one is as
a short form of "co-education" and refers to a mixture of boys and girls.
The second meaning refers just to girls--usually at the college level.
Early in the century when many formerly all-male colleges in the U.S.
started admitting women the term "co-education" or "co-ed" was used to
describe the program. The term for the program was then informally applied
to the women now admitted to it. In the 1920s and 30s, nicknames for
stereotypical male and female college students were "Joe College" and "Betty
Co-ed." So female college students are still sometimes referred to as "co-eds."
It's fading out of use a bit though. Hope this helps.
