Hello to all.
My first time writing on the list. While I agree with the differences in the
Cub program from Biy Scouting. I would like to offer a somewhat dissenting
point of view.
As one of you pointed out, we shouldn;t be inventing nomenclature. However, I
would offer the observation that the shoulder patch for leaders of Webelos
groups (Dens/patrols) reads - Webelos Leader or Assistant Webelos Leader, and
that separate training is required for the Webelos program.
When I was a Cubmaster, I found that the Boys enjoyed being reminded that
being a Webelos Scout was a transition, a growth from Cub to Boy Scout. They
liked that they had earned some extra scouting privileges, but as leaders we
always reminded them that they were not Boy Scouts and pointed out the
differences when we camped with our Troop.
In my mind, Webelos is a "tweener" program. They aren't really Cubs in the
same sense as Wolves and Bears, but they aren't Biy Scouts either. BSA often
describes the program as a 2 year transition to Boy Scouting.
You still have choices, do you call them a den or patrol? Do they wear the
Blue shirt or the Tan one? I chose to set them somewhat aside with a patrol
and the tan shirt. It served as a reminder of the future and a goal to be
attained fo the younger cubs.
I don't say I have the only answer, but it served us well.
Regards,
Dennis
