We call the activity "Isotope Transfer." It's a great team building
exercise. Very simply, get a coffee can (paint it red with a couple of
magenta trefoils) and fill it 3/4 full with water. Place the filled can in
the middle of a path which is about 15' wide. The trail represents the
standoff distance required to avoid "radiation poisoning." Any boy who
comes within a 7-8 foot radius of the can is considered to have become
poisoned. Provide the patrol (6-8 boys) ten, 10-foot lengths of sturdy rope
or nylon line and a piece of rubber tubing (bicycle or truck innertube
material works great). The length of the tubing should be about twice the
circumference of the coffee can.
The mission of the boys is to tie the inner tube into a circle, and tie
their ropes to the inner tube circle in such a fashion that by pulling from
different directions, they slip the tube over the isotope container. We
specify which minimum knots must be used such as two bowlines, two clove
hitches, and a taut-line hitch (the rest they can use any knots they desire.
The team must then carry (or drag) the isotope container (with the ropes
while standing outside of the 7-8 radius) to a designated place, set it down
and finally remove the transport lines from the container. Teams are scored
based on time to mission accomplishment, and they will lose points if they
spill the water, encroach on the 7-8 foot radius, fail to tie proper knots,
etc.

Sounds simple, but it's not, but it is a lot of fun.
