Jim, the fact of the matter is maybe the lad just did NOT want to be an
Eagle or have the desire in his heart. There is a lad in my sons troop that
has completed his project, merit badges, and yet has NOT filled out an
application form, nor completed a write up for his project (completed over
1 1/2 years ago.
He is a good kid, under 18, gets good grades, and very courteous. The
advice his SM provided to him was, "..you have to want it in the first
place, if you don't your in Scouting for the wrong reasons". Well Jim, is it
terrible that a lad does NOT complete his Eagle before he is 18? You
have to assume there is the desire and want to be an Eagle. In the case
where there is none, regardless of the known benefits (that I won't
rehash here), if the boy does not desire to go forward, respect his
wishes.
There has been a back-and-forth dialog of Merry Christmas garbage
going on on Scouts-L, some are offended by the fact of others pushing
their beliefs on to others. All I am trying to say is that, respect the boy
for who he is. From your comment, you really don't (and neither do I)
know the lad. He may be very successful in school, sports, or other
things. And, ithout being with or talking to him, you really don't know
what makes him tick. So, just respect him.
