Many of you have asked for updates on Chris Hardesty and his fight
with cancer. Here is the latest from his father.
So far he has completed the induction chemotherapy phase and surgery.
His is scheduled to begin his bone marrow transplant at Kosair
Children's Hospital in Louisville Kentucky on December 1994.
Chis will be in the transplant unit through February 1995, so keep
the cards and prayers coming. For an update on Chris' progress you can
always call his father John Hardesty at (502) 456-4775 and listen
to the message on the answering machine.
John sends a special thanks to all of the people working on
the card campaign for Chris. He is receiving five to ten cards a day from
all over the United States. He has also received cards from Germany,
The Netherlands, Australia, Canada, and many other countries.
Chris loves to look at all the cards and is saving them all.
He has a special place set aside in his room for displaying the cards from
outside the U.S.
Special Note From Julie Morgan (Cancer Support Group Head):
She is in almost daily contact with the Chris and his father.
THE CARDS ARE WORKING! Chris is bouncing back so fast it is amazing.
His color is back and he loves to retell the jokes he reads on the
cards he has received. Chris is facing the most difficult part of
his treatment. The chemotherapy and radiation treatment he will
receive in December will kill his immune system. He will then have
bone marrow transplants to hopefully restore his immune system.
IF this works (we pray) he will become very very sick. This is
very important. This will mean that his immune system is starting
to work again. This will be a very difficult time for Chris, so
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep those cards and letters and jokes and
prayers and email coming. They are helping more than you know.
If you have already sent a card, please send another one.
From me: John Hardesty lost his job a couple weeks ago. He has been spending
so much time at the hospital and at home taking care of Chris that his
employer was forced to lay him off. He is now working part time.
Chris' parents divorced not long ago and John has custody of Chris.
We took up a collection for him at a recent Boy Scout leader's meeting.
John has not asked for any help, but his friends have convinced him to
accept our help.
