Thanks so much for your comments about Girl Scouts, Bob! Our current
Junior-about to be-Cadette troop has had the following adventures in this
past year: A canoe trip down the Palouse River, 2 cross-country ski
trips, a trail-building overnight, numerous hiking/camping trips (one
overnight in a teepee) AS WELL AS a theater behind the scenes tour, a
how to put on make-up session, jewelry making, toy making, and arts and
crafts activities. We have two dads who are leaders, three moms, great
parental support and rarely have to worry about volunteers.
All of these folks want to see their daughters grow into capable
individuals so our expectations are high and generally the girls meet or
exceed these. We have seen them perform service in the areas of helping
senior citizens, cleaning up the environment, and the trail they are
working on (for the past two-three years) will be available for
wheelchair access.
I encourage dads and moms to be involved with their daughters. Of course,
I also remind them that they need to sit on their hands when working with
these kids so that the kids do the activities rather than have parents do
them for them! Seems to work out fine-and the girls have stayed girls
rather than little Madonna-wanna-bes. (whew! {lots of grins here})
