In my group we do have academic requirments... but for the
girls, from Pre-Brownies to Rangers. If your Young Leaders are what I
am thinking of, then I think the proper thing to do is to agree with
you SPL a tryout period. I mean, since you didn't have any
requirements before, he might argue your meassure! Talk to him, and
agree on a date (end of next term, for example)on which he should
show you noticeable improvement in his academic work.
Maybe this SPL is not realizing the role model he becomes to the
younger scouts. I know because it happens to my Patrol Leaders!
They don't even realize that they are role models for their own
friends at school, or to their brothers and sisters at home! This
should be an important point to talk about with your SPL.
